Food tips: Save money & reduce waste

My lil food tips of the day.

I do a lot of cooking and prefer to make as much as possible from scratch. This tip is a few ways I try not to waste anything, save money and eat healthier.

Tip #1 is anytime I am preparing a meal or dish that includes chopped onion, celery, carrots, garlic, etc. Take the cuttings you would normally throw away and/or compost and throw them in a pot as you chop em up. Doesn’t take any more time than what you are already doing. I use the skins, leaves, everything. Add a lil seasoning (Salt, parsley) fill with water, bring to a boil and cook it down. Strain it into a container and store in your fridge or freezer. You have your own homemade vegetable stock and you can still compost the stuff you strained off. Those lil boxes of stock can be average $3 – $4 each!!  It also helps you control sodium levels.

Tip #2 is when using tuna in a recipe, I strain the water into little bowls and give it to the cats as a treat plus it is great for their coat and overall health. I also pour it on my dogs food.  Again, great for their coat and overall health!

Nothing goes to waste!!

Moisturize & Protect Your Skin

There is a lot of info out there about moisturizers. Be careful what you read and follow online. I tested some searches online and was surprised by the major sites that got it wrong. For example, telling people to use petroleum based products for dry skin, etc. We should avoid any petroleum based products as they strip our skin of natural oils and in some cases cause cancer. The ingredients in products you choose should read like a salad, simple and natural.

Moisturizing is one of the most important steps in caring for your skin. Basically, moisturizers hold water in the outermost layer of skin. They also act as a temporary barrier, protecting the skin, improving skin tone and texture, masking imperfections and helping to heal the skin. Many moisturizers contain some combination of humectants, emollients and other ingredients.

Normally, the moisturizer that’s best for you depends on many factors, including your skin type, your age and whether you have specific conditions, such as acne. My Nectarel lotions and creams are good for all skin types. A lot of it will come down to personal preference.

A lil tip, the best time to moisturize is right after showering and/or washing your face when it is already wet and moist from water. A cream or lotion will lock in the moisture.

My personal favorite for my face is the Honey Almond Cream which I use day and night. It just FEELS good when you put it on and I love how my skin looks after putting it on. It is not heavy or greasy. It can be worn under make up as well.

I use Cocoa Butter Lotion on my body after showering and the Honey Almond Lotion on my hands or to refresh my face during the day. I do switch them out, alternating what I use on some days. Kind of depending on what I feel like using that day.

If you’re not sure where to start, if I had to choose one for my face it would be the cream all day long. Either lotion is great for moisturizing your hands and body. They both feel wonderful and your skin looks amazing after applying them.

Lip Balm

Do not forget to care for and protect your lips. The mouth is where we often first notice signs of aging like fine lines, thinning skin, wrinkles and sun damage.

Many commercial products out there are petroleum based and contain alcohol which dries your skin, makes you lick your lips and exacerbates dry, chapped skin. Use products with natural ingredients that protect and heal your skin.

I have 4 lip balm lines for different seasons, occasions and personal preferences.

100% Pure Beeswax Candles vs Soy and Paraffin Candles

20151223_155947

Commercial candles are made from many products, but paraffin wax is the most common. Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product that is created from the sludge waste when crude oil is refined into gasoline.

It is a petroleum by-product, but what does that really mean? First of all, do some research and as we have found, paraffin starts as the grayish-black sludge which oozes out of the backside of the petroleum refineries. It is the substance left over after producing many of the other common petroleum products such as gas, oils, pavement, etc.

This grayish-black crud is then bleached with 100% strength bleach (creating dioxins, which are toxic), while we only use 10% bleach in our laundry. This white ooze is then processed into ‘solid’ paraffin using various. carcinogenic, solidifying chemicals, a common one is called acrolyn.

Paraffin wax is then sold to many companies and people who add various other ‘texturizing’ chemicals, artificial dyes for color and synthetic fragrances.

What about Soy? Although soy candles don’t boast medicinal properties, soy is clearly a better choice that paraffin candles… SOMETIMES. There is a catch…

In the U.S., the term “pure” on a label means only 51% of an ingredient (and that goes for food too). Companies sell both “pure” beeswax candles and “pure” soy candle, which contain a combination of 51% beeswax/soy wax and 49% toxic paraffin. Look for the key phrase “100% Pure Beeswax” or “100% Soy” on candles.

But even 100% soy candles have some significant problems: Soy candles contain paraffin.

Interestingly, even a 100% soy wax candle must be processed with a small amount of paraffin. Potentially, burning a 100% soy candle will release small amounts of the carcinogens and toxins found in paraffin. Again, most soy candles on the market are not 100% soy, and contain a high percentage of poisonous paraffin.

Soy candles often contain fragrances and dyes

Additionally, many soy candles contain the same poisonous dyes and fragrances added to paraffin candles. (Granted, some low quality beeswax candles are dyed and fragranced, too, and they do not offer the healing benefits of 100% pure beeswax candles.) Interestingly, essential oils are not safe options for candle fragrances, either. A soy or beeswax candle scented with essential oils will release toxins, since combustion changes the molecular structure of these oils.

100% pure beeswax candles require no added fragrances or dyes, because the pollen and honey content of the wax offer a natural orange color and light, sweet fragrance.

Soy candles pose environmental concerns

More than 90% of soy is genetically modified! GM soy crops are heavily sprayed with toxic pesticides, causing harm to both the harvesters and the soil. So if you are buying soy candles, chances are you are supporting the production of GMO’s–which devastate our environment and our health.

Beeswax wins hands down!

Beeswax candles are amazing. Not only are they NOT bad for you but they have many benefits. First of all, beeswax is a renewable, all natural product with no additives or fillers. Its non-toxic properties make it perfect for a clean burning and bright fuel source, like our 100% pure beeswax candles.

Unlike most of the manufactured paraffin candles, beeswax is hypo-allergenic, great for people with allergies or other sensitivities and those of us who want a safe, clean burning candle in our homes. Here is a list of benefits:

  • Incredibly long burning. They are longer burning than any other candles, including vegetable/soy waxes, costing only pennies an hour to burn.
  • Our 100% pure beeswax candles are the cleanest burning candles that you will ever burn. They are naturally dripless as well as smoke & soot free.
  • Hypo-allergenic. They are proven to be beneficial for people who have allergies, environmental sensitivities and just too much stress in their life.
  • Are completely non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. With its healthful negative ions and warm, golden, halo’d glow they act like indoor air purifiers, cleansing the air of dust, odors, toxins, pollens, molds, and viruses. It also exudes a natural aromatheric, honey essence that balances the human spirit.

We use only clean, lightly filtered, 100% pure beeswax from beeswax cappings in our beeswax candles, with no filler or additives. All of our bees wax comes from our own beehives. We are the beekeepers.

The process of manufacturing a beeswax candle is a delicate process. Our candles are hand poured so there will be slight variations and imperfections, making each candle unique. Also the yellow color of the candles varies depending on the wax the bees make. It can vary from a pale yellow to a rich, dark, golden yellow. We can not control the color as it depends what the bees eat. The plants that may be in bloom for the bees can vary depending on location and time of year.

Remember, when you buy paraffin candles, you are spending money to poison your home. Beeswax candles, like I discussed, are a healing investment and worth the higher price tag. Soy candles–even 100% pure soy candles–cost significantly less than beeswax. Those who want a more affordable alternative to paraffin often go with soy candles. Although this is a personal decision, but I would rather go candle-free than settle for anything less than 100% beeswax. Be sure the beeswax candle you are buying is indeed 100% pure beeswax. If the candle doesn’t say 100% beeswax, it most likely is not.

MASQUES MADE SIMPLE

What exactly are masques? Some of us have no idea what a masque is or does when it comes to caring for our skin. Think of the basic skin care steps (cleanse, tone, moisturizer) we have discussed so far as your regular diet and/or nutritional intake and masques as sort of like your “supplements”. We cleanse, tone and moisturize everyday being sure our skin gets the care and nourishment it needs but sometimes that is not enough. Like our bodies, our skin is bombarded with toxins, pollutants and all sorts of things that attack, damage and age our skin. Sometimes the basics are just is not enough to treat, fight and address issues. This is especially true when battling skin issues and waging war against aging.

There are a variety of masques including clay, cream or gel masques. Once “set” masques may harden, are rubbery, or be a thin tightening layer on your skin. They also can do a variety of things just as supplements can. Depending on the ingredients masques can tighten and tone the skin, clear up blemishes, draw out impurities, nourish, hydrate, calm and/or soothe the skin giving it a rejuvenated appearance. The common ingredients include clay, algae, essential oils, carrier oils, herbs and vitamins and other natural ingredients. They can address whatever issues you are having with your skin including dryness, dehydration, acne or aging skin.

My Nectarel line carries 2 masques right now. The Nectarel Wild Oats and Honey Masque of course has the amazing benefits of honey. The humectant and skin-enhancing properties of honey have been used since ancient times. Honey has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which give it healing power. It has always been famous for its natural antioxidant properties, which play an important role in protecting the skin from ultraviolet damage. Overexposure to the sun causes skin damage, premature aging and even skin cancer. Honey can be used as a sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun. Honey can fight infections below the skin’s top layer by unclogging pores and drawing out impurities, it can help you deal with acne problems. The active properties of honey penetrate the blocked follicle, killing the bacteria which cause acne and any infection.

I have my Nectarel Pumpkin Masque on now while I am writing this article. It is my FAVORITE for this time of year. I LOVE how my skin looks and feels after using it. Pumpkin is a natural fall and winter choice. This scrumptious exfoliating treatment targets our dull, maturing, and chaotic skin. Pumpkin is a rich source of antioxidants & enzymes and contains more than 100 beneficial nutrients which help skin transition through the changing seasons.

Some masques I steam before using to open the pores so it can deep clean better. DO NOT STEAM before using this masque. Test it on small area before use on entire face. It can irritate sensitive skin or skin that has open pores. Only you will know when to wash off the masque, which should happen at the first sign of burning vs tingling. Each time I used it the tingling effect was less. Masques can tingle or sting if your skin is dry, dehydrated, malnourished, etc. Drink a lot of water and moisturize your skin! A step I will cover in an upcoming article.

Many people buy the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, but pass up the facial masque.  It’s actually a good idea to buy it and use it when you give yourself a pampering home facial once a week.  SAVE $2.00 on each masque for a limited time! That is a $4.00 savings on both masques!! Be sure to order today!!

Stay tuned!

SKIN CARE LESSON #4: SERUMS AND BASICS REVIEW

SKIN CARE BASICS REVIEW AND SERUMS

This week is sort of a general discussion or back to the basics review. I get messages all the time asking if there is one product for wrinkles or acne/break outs. The answer is no. If someone says there is, they are lying and just trying to sell you some snake oil.

Over the last few weeks we have covered the first few key steps: Cleansing, Toning and Exfoliating. (Scroll down on my page to see those.) A good skin care regime is similar to a healthy diet to maintain weight and health. There is no magic pill to the get fit and healthy. The same goes for your skin. No magic potion. You must cleanse & detox, tone and nourish your body. The same goes for your skin.

A healthy diet is vital to have and maintain clear, beautiful, young looking skin. Any serums, treatments or “magic pills” should be used in addition to your basic skin care regime, not the only thing you do in hopes to achieve serious results.

There are countless lotion, potions and serums out there depending on what you are looking to treat and or achieve. My Supreme Facial Serum is natural, pure and multifaceted. It is a soothing organic Aloe Vera and Rose Distillate Water base, adding cold pressed Carrot Seed Oil, Meadow Foam Seed Oil and humectant Vegetable Glycerin to its ultra-moisturizing foundation. Multiple Fruit Extract adds alpha hydroxy acids of citric and malic acid from organic lemon peel and organic bilberries, ascorbic acid from organic orange peel, glycolic and lactic acid from organic cane sugar, and tartatic and oxalic acid from organic cranberries. Tartaric acid derived DMAE gives the skin a firm and toned appearance. Vegan derived Hyaluronic Acid allows the serum to hold high concentrations of these other ingredients. It is also packed with essential nutrients such as vitamin A, B, C & E, CoQ10 and Alpha Lipoic acid.

Stay tuned for my next lil skin care lesson…

SKIN CARE LESSON #3: TONER

This was previously posted on January 19th, 2016 on my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ThePresidentOfFunnyFarm/

TONER

Toning is a critical, often overlooked step of daily skin care. After cleansing, it is important to follow up with a toner. There are a variety of types of toners and there are a several benefits.

It removes dirt and oils that normal cleansing did not get. Ground in dirt and oil stuck in pores. If you are on the go, you can use toner to cleanse your skin to remove dirt or oil. It leaves your skin feel revitalized.

It shrinks pores. It helps reduce the appearance of pores but also buy shrinking pores it adds a layer of protection. This can prevent impurities and contaminants in the environment from penetrating the skin. It can even help to remove minerals and chlorine found in tap water.

Our skin is naturally acidic with a ph range of 5 to 6. Cleansing effects or disturbs our natural ph. It could take hours for you skin to restore balance which could result in the over production of oil. That could lead to more break outs. Toner helps to balance the skin quickly.

Toners can be moisturizing. They are humectants, which means they help bind moisture to the skin.

Toners also prepare your skin for moisturizers and for nourishing serums and treatments like my Nectarel Supreme Facial Serum.

My Essential Nectarel Tea Tree & Vinegar Facial Toner is a combination of some of my favorite ingredients for the skin. It is effective yet gentle and perfect for all skin types. It is pH-balanced for skin and is especially beneficial for those with a less than perfect complexion. Add a toner to complete your skin care regimen. Toning is a critical, often overlooked step of daily skin care. Toning adjusts the pH of the skin and removes any remaining oil or dirt from the skin preparing it for nourishing serums and moisturizers.
